For most of human history, childbirth was a natural biological process. Today, it is one of the most technologically managed conditions in modern medicine. Perfect Imperfections asks a vital question: in the pursuit of safer births, have we gone too far?
Drawing on more than four decades as a physician, scientist, and educator, Dr. Daniel I. Edelstone offers a deeply informed and personal perspective. Having delivered more than 7,000 babies and contributed to the development of the field of maternal-fetal medicine, he takes readers from the delivery room to the research lab and into the realities of medical training.
Through vivid clinical stories and thoughtful reflection, he traces the evolution of childbirth care over the past fifty years—revealing both its remarkable progress and its unintended consequences. At the heart of the book lies a powerful paradox: as medicine strives for perfect results, interventions increase, yet outcomes for many low-risk pregnancies have not significantly improved.
Interwoven with these insights is a profoundly human story—one of professional doubt, personal struggle, love, and loss. Dr. Edelstone explores the emotional and ethical complexities of caring for pregnant women and their babies, ultimately arriving at a hard-earned truth: while medicine can achieve extraordinary advances, perfection remains an illusion, both in childbirth and in life.
Blending memoir with narrative medicine, Perfect Imperfections offers readers a clearer understanding of modern childbirth and a compelling vision for a more balanced and compassionate approach to care.
About the Author
Daniel I. Edelstone, MD, is an accomplished physician-scientist, educator, and academic leader in obstetrics, gynecology, and maternal-fetal medicine. A graduate of the University of Southern California School of Medicine, he completed residency and research fellowship training at the University of Pittsburgh and the Cardiovascular Research Institute at the University of California, San Francisco.
Board certified in obstetrics and gynecology with subspecialty certification in maternal-fetal medicine, he also led an NIH-funded research program in maternal and fetal physiology and authored numerous peer-reviewed publications. His main research focus was in defining how fetuses adapt successfully to changes in oxygen supply throughout pregnancy and during childbirth.
During more than four decades in medical practice, he served in senior faculty and leadership roles at several universities. Based primarily at the University of Pittsburgh and at its affiliated hospitals - UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital and UPMC Mercy - Dr. Edelstone cared for women with both routine and high-risk pregnancies while training generations of obstetrician-gynecologists.
Now retired, Dr. Edelstone writes from deep experience within academic and clinical medicine, reflecting on both the professional and personal dimensions of a life spent caring for patients and their families at some of our most transformative moments.
