Looking for a missing husband is not usually Lovejoy's cup of tea, but this missing husband happens to be an antiques dealer. As usual the police are less than tolerant of Lovejoy's motives and methods - and, as usual, Lovejoy uses his charm, wit, and a little scam of his own to see that justice triumphs.
Industry Reviews
Lovejoy's a bundle of contradictions - an infallible divvie (a finder of the real thing in the antique world) who's perpetually penniless; an avowed misogynist who can't resist a tenderhearted tumble; and a lover of the genuine article who's perfectly willing to pass off the fake to anyone who ought to know better. Forcefully persuaded to help the wife of another dealer find her missing husband, Lovejoy follows the man's trail on his latest sweep of the local counties in search of privately held antiques. Early on, he figures the fellow doesn't know his business and must be after something else, which turns out to be a scare based on the selling of a variant of a baroque pearl pendant. Then, after one of his eccentric old friends is murdered, and the body of the missing man is discovered, our divvie slips out of the murder charge and cooks up a scheme that finally proves even the constabulary isn't above making a killing in big-business antiques. This is Lovejoy's ninth appearance. He's as smooth-talking (some might say he's arch and cryptic) as ever, as full of antiques-arcana, as much the old softie and as delightfully single-minded: "Tinker really can't see the point in actually loving antiques. I can't see the point in loving anything else." (Kirkus Reviews)
