Claire Randall is leading a double life. She has a husband in one century, and a lover in another... In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon--when she innocently touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach-- an " outlander" -- in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of our Lord...1743. Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire's destiny in soon inextricably intertwined with Clan MacKenzie and the forbidden Castle Leoch. She is catapulted without warning into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life ...and shatter her heart. For here, James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a passion so fierce and a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire...and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.
A good story romanticising a challenging time in history.
Quality of print is disappointing
The author and story are fantastic! However this particular edition is very poor quality printing. Some printing is light some dark. The printing comes off in your hand while reading.
I buy books for mu 96 yo as I am in US
I haven't read this myself but am in USA and love the series. Am planning on reading while on vacation. My mother is challenged with reading so this is difficult for her to read due to small and light font. Such a shame. Is it cheaper to print like this?

Great mix of love, history and fantasy
I love this book. It is a great mix of Scottish history and a beautiful love storey. The characters are amazing and I couldn't put the book down. Read it every minute I could.
I loved the first season of the Starz TV show Outlander, this is why I bought the book. The series pays a fantastic tribute to the book (season 1 at least).
The story is original and you'll never be bored while reading. The author did a lot of research on 18th century Scotland and it is really interesting.
While the book has a large number of pages, the paperback format is easy to take with me
For me, I had already seen season 1 and 2 of the TV series Outlander before picking up this book so I already had an inclination that I would love it, which I did. As you would assume, the book provides so much more detail and richness to the landscape, characters and polt. I can see myself reading this book again.
Love Love Love
Ive watched the tv series based on the books and loved it, the book is just so much better, I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
This series is quite involved but well worth the journey. You will fall in love with these characters.
An Amazing Journey
This is a wonderful start to a long series of novels. The characters are amazingly rich and real. The story line is coplex and interesting. Read the novels and then watch the TV series.
