An innocent man is convicted of killing another man. After serving a couple of years, he escapes.
The story relates his trials and tribulations as he runs through the mountains, from Oregon to Salt Lake City.
During the time on the run, he attempts to settle several times, but is thwarted each time, even though he does good things along the way.
