On Gifted Elders: Awareness, Aspirations, Advocacy, not only dispels the myth that giftedness is a construct applicable solely to our school years but provides insight into the world of the gifted elder. Joy Navan, Ph.D. addresses the continued, often urgent, need of our gifted elders for continued learning, engagement, and productivity. With understanding and sensitivity as a therapist and gifted elder herself, Dr. Navan provides the reader (and those in their care) with a toolbox purposefully equipped with practical tools and readily implemented strategies. Whether you are a gifted elder, a member of the sandwich generation caring for a gifted elder, a therapist, or assisted living facility director, On Gifted Elders will provide you not only insight to our gifted elders, but a perspective from which you can best support and accommodate their very special needs.

Industry Reviews

What happens when the gifted grow up and journey into elderhood? This question and so much more can be discovered upon reading this book. Navan has provided a researcher's framework and an extraordinary walkthrough revealing again what we know about the 'soul' of gifted people from across cultures. I will read this book over and over as a productive gifted elder to reassure me that I am genuinely into my journey, being as resilient, spiritual, productive, and extraordinarily my gifted self as I can be. I encourage all who have a vested interest in the lives of differently wired, gifted individuals across age, culture, gender, social experience to read this book. I hope you do as I plan to- read it, take a deep meditative breath with it, dream with it, be reassured with it, use it in your own work to inform others about the uniqueness of being gifted and then, read it again. -Joy Lawson Davis, EdD

"On Gifted Elders" is like a dear friend, familiar, comforting and assuring, it simultaneously is descriptive, informative and inspirational, woven together in the warp and weft Navan herself references, calling us to both understand and advocate for those rarely considered but deeply treasured.

I loved reading this book and getting to know the gentle soul of Joy Navan. Her personal stories of her giftedness over the years along with her present experiences of elderhood provide a rich journey for the reader. She includes research from her academic careers along with insightful examples from elders she has known. - Paula Prober, author of Your Rainforest Mind and Journey Into Your Rainforest Mind

In ending for those well read in gifted along with individuals just learning about their own giftedness as a young adult, midlife or elder this book reads succinctly with great wisdom and offers methods for advocacy for gifted elders. Dr. Navan's book, On Gifted Elders, reflects her ability to mentor others along this journey on planet earth. Another mentor mentioned in this book, Annemarie Roeper, who I also personally knew, I believe would be well pleased reading her mentee's book by Joy Navan. Dr. Navan provides a tangible lovingly written work for readers who also consider the mystery - the beyond.

What I treasure most in this book is the focus on the whole person-what is seen and what is unseen. On Gifted Elders is a supportive and informative guide for those making the transition from "I am what I do" to "I do what I am." - Lisa Rivero, author of A Parent's Guide to Gifted Teens, and The Smart Teens' Guide to Living with Intensity

Gifted elders have particular needs, and even more so if said elder is twice-exceptional. Joy Navan's new book, On Gifted Elders, is the book I needed and I am grateful she wrote it. Not only does Joy write about the unique needs of gifted elders, she provides actionable suggestions for meeting those needs, however they may present. It's difficult being the center of the sandwich generation; adding giftedness to the mix in all generations just makes it one of those deliciously enormous sandwiches. You need both hands, patience, and all the help you can get. Joy's book is that help. - Jen Merrill, Writer, advocate for gifted/2e parents, flutist, Renaissance Woman
