Published in 1997, Off White brought a much-needed analysis of the white racialization process to the multicultural discussion, particularly within the field of education. While the collection is primarily focused on the field of education, contributors hailed from a range of disciplines, including psychology, sociology, anthropology, women's studies, and ethnic studies. The studies documented the characteristics of whiteness but also revealed the ways that whiteness demands and constitutes hierarchy, exclusion, and deprivation. For this new edition the editors have crafted a volume more deliberately focused on the material conditions of whiteness as a privilege, and the turns of whiteness produced when individuals and collectives take up a challenge to contemporary racial formations. They have also added a section that speaks to the theory of research methods for studying whiteness and racial formations - a particularly important addition for those in education and psychology programs. With a new introduction from the editors, nine entirely new pieces, and the best of the first edition fully updated, this new edition of Off White will continue to be a classic in the field.
Industry Reviews

"In a crowded field of books interrogating the concept of whiteness, Off White clearly and deftly distinguishes itself from the pack. This superb collection emphasizes the materiality of white privilege and the ways whiteness is represented, expressed, and embedded in various social sites and institutions. We peer into the 'souls of white folks,' and consider the emergent politics and practices that can trouble, subvert, and challenge white racial privilege." -- Michael Omi, University of California, Berkeley
Reviews of the First Edition
"Off White is a highly valuable contribution to the debate on the connections between 'race' and power. The breadth of the theories and methodologies represented, not to mention the numerous insights provided by the authors, many of whom are committed to anti-racist pedagogies, makes Off White an intellectually stimulating and personally challenging book." -- Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies
