Never-Ending Birds is an exploration narrative told in lyric poems. It is part map, part travelogue, part chronicle, part autobiography - a natural and personal history. The triggering impulse of each poem is crisis, especially the decay of a sense of home, the familiar and familial, and breakup of a marriage. Other kinds of peril provide further anxiety: medical and health issues; development, suburban encroachment, and environmental damage; familial, psychological, political, linguistic and aesthetic pressures. The poems here travel to and through a wide variety of landscapes and all kinds of neighborhoods - long past, imagined, or omnipresent - from little Midwestern villages to the boroughs of big cities, seeking to understand the nature of home, seeking to find a home in nature. Many of the poems are portraits of neighbors and native-dwellers: the people, lifestyles, animals, trees and flowers that we live with and near. The book is also a lyric map, as the poems explore new and unknown realms, chart inhabitants and environs, and seek new language for experience.
