Hugh Riminton was a small-town teenager with a drinking problem, cleaning rat cages for a living, when a chance meeting with a radio news director changed his life.

The newsman, mistaking Riminton for a job applicant, hired him. At 17, he became an accidental journalist.

He stuck with it, eventually becoming a multi-award winning international journalist broadcasting from wars and disaster-zones to audiences numbering in the 100s of millions.

Along the way, he covered genocide in Africa, the end of apartheid, wars and conflicts in Iraq, Gaza, Afghanistan, the Balkans, East Timor, Somalia and many places besides. He reported from the scene of some of the largest natural disasters in recorded history.

In Australia he covered momentous events including the Port Arthur massacre, the Thredbo disaster and plenty of political skulduggery.

Over nearly 40 years, he has been shot at, blown up and thrown in jail; he has bought slaves and freed them, he has lost friends to war, and gained hard-won insights into what really matters in the end.

Despite the subject matter, there are plenty of laughs. Riminton has a fine eye for the absurd and is gentle on both the heroes and the villains who cross his path.

Minefields is Hugh’s account of four decades in the news game.
