Society, culture, and history are molded by Meta-humans, human beings with supernatural powers. Countries that became extinct and disappeared exist today, while others never formed. In modern times you have three types of heroes. The first is those sponsored by corporations acting like movie and comic book heroes. The second are police and army sponsored by the government. The third are renegades, who are vigilantes that refuse to be controlled. Villains are also more nuanced, who see crimes as a business, those who want power, and those who want the world to burn.
