But everyone of us has his proper work to do and none of us is required to do more than the will of God for him. God’s will is our peace. In doing our part of God’s will we shall find peace, but in attempting more than our part we shall find only anxiety and frustration. There are then the two contrasting energies at work, marring or making for wholeness in the lives of men: on the one hand the big noisy, apparently unconquerable passions of the world, which are the “thieves and rogues” of man’s true nature; and on the other, the quiet, gentle but immensely powerful work of the Good Shepherd.
