Britain's finest writer of hard SF takes a headlong dive into the unknown with this series that reaches back millions of years into the past and which features a longtusk as its mammoth hero. It is interesting to speculate what drove Baxter to move into what is, for him, uncharted territory. His work always emphasises the intelligent application of science rather than the more airy-fairy elements of the fantasy genre. Moreover, Baxter has openly criticized the excesses of the latter on several occasions. In Longtusk Baxter looks millions of years back in time to one of the first mammoth heroes: the bull, Longtusk whose example was an inspiration for the hero of the first book, Silverhair. Longtusk undertakes to lead the mammoths away from the first incursion of the malignant human hunters, taking them onto the Asian landmass and actually transmogrifying the very architecture of Earth's prehistoric geology. The attention to detail and the storytelling brio of both books whet the appetite for concluding part. (Kirkus UK)
