One county has lights. Nine hundred and eleven miles of dark are waiting. Cole Merritt strung a line through the end of the world and it held. Now the Ledger has stopped billing him like a survivor and started billing him like a utility, and a utility that only serves its own town is just a fence with a bulb on it. So the Interconnected Region does the thing nobody in the dark has ever done. It builds outward. Toward a walled city that sells light by the yard. Toward a town at the bottom of a bowl that everyone wrote off. Toward a column of strangers walking in from the west with their own doctrine, their own dead, and a very good reason not to trust anybody who offers them power. The work is brutal, the accounts are worse, and every mile of new line costs eleven weeks of somebody else's evenings. Then there is the thing in the dark that has been copying his splices. It does not speak. It cannot be paid. It has taken a tool belt, a lamp, and a place on the ground gang, and it is the best apprentice Cole has ever had. Live Wire is Book Two of Gridfall: blue-collar competence under pressure, hard System economics, a found family that argues about paperwork and dies for each other anyway, and a finale that turns a wall of static into a bearing, a distance, and a work plan. For readers who think the best superpower is a man who knows what he is doing, and the best plot twist is a town that keeps its promises.
