Leviathan, written by Thomas Hobbes and published in 1651 during the English Civil War, is a foundational work of political philosophy. Hobbes presents a systematic account of human nature, society, and government. He argues that all human action is motivated by self-interest and self-preservation. In the state of nature, without government, life would be "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short"—a war of all against all. To escape this, individuals agree to a social contract, surrendering their natural rights in exchange for protection by an absolute sovereign. The work also addresses religious authority, arguing the sovereign should have ultimate power over both church and state.
