This book will introduce readers to Lesson Study (LS) as it has developed in the UK over ten years and make the historical connections with LS as it developed in Japan and in east Asian countries, in the US and Europe. It will explain to readers how to conduct LS in schools (based on 10 years of development expertise) and in other educational institutions such as higher education settings or early years settings.

Examples will be provided of compelling, externally evaluated impact outcomes for primary learners (pupils or students in organisations using LS) and teacher learners. The book will provide vivid exemplars of LS in action in these settings across age ranges and curricular contexts.

It will present research outcomes - principally from research led by the author but also from projects and evaluations which have been advised by the author and from others worldwide - that demonstrate very clearly how and why LS has a place within those teacher learning approaches that have the greatest impact and the greatest capacity building potential for creating outstanding teaching. This will be evidenced through primary research evidence and linked with contemporary and recent high quality research worldwide into pupil learning, teacher learning, school improvement and system improvement.

It will illustrate the diverse application of LS for innovating or transferring highly effective practices in a range of learning contexts designed to boost learning for children with a range of challenges and specific needs.

It will also provide a global perspective on the way that LS is spreading and being used around the world to develop and renew integrated curricula in Japan, to create greater innovation and creativity in Singapore's 'Teach less Learn More' policy initiative, to boost attainment and learning through Hong Kong's 'learning study' and how it is in use in ITT contexts in the US and university contexts in Palestine.
