U.S. Marshal Lincoln Hawk is tasked with investigating a mysterious fire that destroyed the town of Wide Plains. With no proof of any wrongdoing Lincoln is minded to conclude that the incident was an accident when Theodore Cushing arrives with a promise to finance the rebuilding of the town.
Theodore claims he's just a businessman seeking to make a profit, but Lincoln suspects he knows more about the tragedy than he's revealed. Before Lincoln can question him, a daring raid spirits away Theodore's stake and it becomes apparent that his role is only a part of a larger and deadlier endeavor.
