Product Description

In 2008, John Kinsella and his family left their home outside of Perth to live on a former horse-property north of the town of Toodyay in the Western Australian wheatbelt. Removing all the internal fences and allowing the native wildlife from the adjacent reserve to move through the place they renamed Jam Tree Gully, Kinsella and his family have concentrated on restoring bushland there and protecting 'nature' as much as possible. Using Thoreau's Walden as a point of dialogue and departure, he contemplates what it means to live in harmony with the so-called natural world and the human world. Walden, for instance, with its omnipresent water, becomes a kind of affirmation as water supplies at Jam Tree Gully get low in fierce summers where the district is ravaged by thirst and bushfire. But Kinsella also wrestles with Walden's apparent contradictions regarding the place of individual responsibility and the rights of animals. He also examines the ultimate contradictions of land 'ownership' and how we discuss the land we occupy, especially if 'we' are of a colonial heritage.
