Jackson County was created in 1851 by a special act of the North Carolina legislature and was named in honor of Andrew Jackson. Known for its lofty peaks and spectacular scenery, it is home to Western Carolina University and borders the Blue Ridge Parkway and Cherokee Indian Reservation.

Co-authors and Sylva Herald staffers Nick Breedlove, left, and Lynn Hotaling, third from left, signed copies for almost two hours with the assistance of City Lights' Jenifer Ross, second from left. The book is an outgrowth of The Sylva Herald's popular "Then and Now" features and documents county history through vintage photographs paired with current images. Proceeds from the book will benefit the Jackson County Historical Society. Arcadia released "Sylva," written by Hotaling, last fall.
