One Toronto family, two centuries, two world wars -- and one Spitfire over Nazi Europe. How history kept interrupting the peace.
Flying Officer Robert James Buckles escaped from a German POW camp in the last days of World War II, intent on making his way to Allied lines. Only 22, he had already become the Spitfire pilot he'd always wanted to be. Now he wanted nothing more than to make it home to the village of his ancestors on the outskirts of Toronto, and to the ordinary adventures of a peaceful life that had been interrupted by war.
But Robert's story doesn't begin with him. Across two centuries and multiple generations, a Toronto-area family navigated the Upper Canada Rebellion, the trenches of France and Belgium, and the deadly air battles over occupied Europe. Their choices reflect the choices every individual, every family, every nation must still confront: how to defend a peace that history never stops threatening.
