He promised he would come home. She believed him. Then his final letter arrived after his death.

Tony Balbados was only a boy when he first noticed Marry Nockdown standing in the doorway with a poetry book pressed against her chest.

He had come to tutor her sister in mathematics. He never expected that an ordinary afternoon would become the beginning of the greatest love of his life.

Years later, Tony and Marry marry and build a small, imperfect, happy life together. They have little money, a little house, a garden, and all the ordinary dreams of a young couple who believe they have plenty of time.

Then the world changes.

After America enters the war, Tony puts on a uniform and leaves Marry behind. At the train station, with steam rising around them and goodbye becoming real, he makes her a promise:

"Whatever happens, I'll come home to you."

But war does not care about promises.

Across the ocean, Tony and Marry hold onto each other through letters. His words become part of her daily life. She learns his handwriting by heart. She waits for the sound of the postman. She reads his letters beneath the same roof where they once dreamed about growing old together.

But the letters begin arriving late.

A letter written weeks ago cannot tell her where Tony is today. A photograph cannot reveal what his tired eyes have seen. And reassurance written from a distant battlefield cannot protect the woman waiting at home from the truth.

When Tony is wounded, he hides the seriousness of his condition because he cannot bear to make Marry afraid. When another dangerous operation approaches, he writes a letter unlike any he has written before—a letter filled with memories of the boy who first saw her in the doorway, their first kiss, their wedding, their little house, and the future they always believed was waiting for them.

It becomes his final letter.

Tony dies before it reaches home.

His comrades find the letter among his belongings and make sure it is sent.

Weeks later, Marry receives it.

She smiles before opening it, believing her husband has written another ordinary letter from the war.

Instead, she finds the last piece of him.

And only after she has read his words does the official notification arrive.

Tony has been killed in action.

His final letter was written before he died.

But it arrived after him.

Because sometimes the last goodbye does not arrive when death does.

Sometimes it arrives weeks later, carried across an ocean and written in ink.
