I am a blind identity theft survivor whose search for justice exposed a troubling reality: there is a severe lack of accessible, practical information available to victims of identity theft.
My book, Identity Theft: A Victim's Search for Justice, serves as both a memoir and a comprehensive resource for victims and the general public. It not only chronicles my personal journey but also provides practical guidance on how to recognize, prevent, and respond to identity theft before becoming a victim.
The book is the result of extensive research, drawing from nearly 20 books, numerous articles, state and federal statutes, and a thorough examination of New York's Penal Code alongside federal identity theft laws. Throughout my investigation, I discovered significant gaps in legal protections for victims. At the time, New York treated many forms of cybercrime as civil matters rather than criminal offenses. Determined to create change, I worked with members of the New York State Assembly and Senate to help draft legislation that would elevate cybercrime to felony status.
As I pursued justice, I was also coping with the loss of my vision-a challenge that became intertwined with my fight for accountability. My story highlights not only the personal impact of identity theft but also the urgent need to modernize outdated laws that leave too many victims unprotected.
Identity Theft: A Victim's Search for Justice shines a light on the vulnerabilities within our legal system while empowering readers with practical steps they can take to safeguard themselves in today's increasingly digital world. It is both a call to action and a reminder that stronger protections are essential for everyone.
My educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Criminology from the University of Wisconsin, a Master of Arts in Psychology, and a Paralegal Certification from Marist College. These experiences provided the foundation for the extensive research and legal analysis that shaped my first book.
