Fly League hockey player Pie Pennelli has two problems, teammate Terry the Terrible Mason's unexplained hostility and a pair of over-sized hand-me-down skates that trip him up during crucial plays. But just when this begins to read like a replay, Christopher introduces the little Byrd twins next door, whose 1896 toy hockey game has the apparent power to predict the course and outcome of upcoming games. Just as a pregame trial on the Byrds' toy has foretold, Pie loses the last game and is put out of action by a broken blade, but the final outcome is friendship with Terry and a new pair of skates. Thus when Terry's cat Tipper at last breaks the antique game's magic it has already accomplished its purpose - not only for Pie but also as supernatural assist to a formula sports story.
