Ian J McNiven

Ian J. McNiven is an anthropological archaeologist and holds the position of Professor of Indigenous Archaeology at Monash Indigenous Studies Centre, Monash University, Melbourne. Additionally, he is a Chief Investigator in the Monash node of the ARC Centre for Excellence for Australian Biodiversity and Heritage. His specialization lies in the archaeology of Australian Indigenous societies, with a primary focus on island societies in Torres Strait and the Queensland coast, as well as volcanic plains societies in western Victoria. Throughout his academic career, he has held positions at the University of Queensland and The University of Melbourne. He has also served as a visiting research fellow at Cambridge University and Oxford University. His extensive private industry experience includes work as a cultural heritage consultant, and he has contributed to various native title cases, serving as an expert witness for the Torres Strait Sea Claim.

His primary theoretical research interest centers around understanding the long-term development of specialized maritime societies, with a particular emphasis on the archaeology of seascapes and the ritualistic and spiritual connections with the sea. Other research interests encompass the archaeology of the southern coast of New Guinea and ancient cultural links with northeast Australia, as well as the colonial history of Indigenous archaeology. He had the honor of serving as the President of the Australian Archaeological Association Inc. from 2007 to 2009. He is an elected Fellow of both the Society of Antiquaries London (since 2007) and the Australian Academy of the Humanities (since 2013).

In addition to publishing 170 refereed journal papers and book chapters, along with 80 cultural heritage consultancy reports, he has co-authored/edited 14 books and volumes.
