This picture book, I Lost My Tooth, is one of simplicity with deep meaning. It is with minimal and predictable text. The main character "Walrus" makes a perfect subject as his two long teeth are so notable in defining his character. Multiple other characters within the mammalian family cry out, proclaiming they too have lost a tooth. The stress of loss is resolved, and hope is restored to all other animals when "Walrus" grows a second replacement tooth (as most mammals do). The black and white illustrations are bold, simple, loveable, and memorable. The backgrounds, foregrounds, and inner text are painted with a toothbrush using various techniques. This book is a great beginner reader book and cathartic to a child's emotions around the loss of a tooth as well as their empathy and connection to the animal world.

*The character "Walrus" appears in another book titled, "Walrus, Will You Hang With Me?".

There is a Great Philosophy Behind the Book, "I Lost My Tooth"

By recognizing biological and behavioral patterns we share with mammals, we will deepen our relationship with living creatures other than humankind. In so doing, we will realize that the idea of family extends beyond our house to around the globe. Mother Earth is OUR home. May we learn to appreciate all living creatures of this world. The author brings to us this philosophy dressed in brilliant simplicity.

I Lost My Tooth

There are many animal characters to meet in this book. Each one of them is isolated with a problem, losing one's tooth. The illustrator magnifies the isolation and distress by giving each character their own page. The backgrounds are abstract symbolizing emotion. The book comes to a crescendo when the poignant character "Walrus" discovers his lost tooth is growing back. All characters are filled with hope and acceptance that they too will grow another tooth. In the end of the book, the characters are together as one earthly family.
