Elizabeth Stephenson is a Canadian combat engineer captain sent to assist a 25th Marine Infantry Battalion in securing a town in Afghanistan. She is badly injured. After recovery, she goes to reserve status and becomes a civilian engineer. She meets an asocial, non-military, geek, civil engineer Derrick Norman, with whom she starts a relationship.
