The author pocketed #50,000 for this first fantasy novel - written when he was 16. Anselm Audley, despite his youth, gets an emphatic thumbs-up and automatic entry into the upper echelons of science fiction for Heresy, the first in a three book series from Earthlight. Audley really is an innovative writer, with his saga of the storm-wracked water world of Aquasilva shot through with the kind of exuberant storytelling skill that many had thought was lost to the genre. On Aquasilva, total religious power is in the hands of The Domain, dedicated to the element fire. But an unwilling agent of change is the youthful Cathan, who stumbles on a plot to inaugurate a new age of fundamentalism. Inevitably, comparisons are being made with Frank Herbert's legendary Dune sequence, still the lodestone for this kind of ambitious saga. There are unusual touches: the religious theme is something that's handled well, and this is not something over-used in the genre.
