A new collection of the best of John Gray's recent essays

By the author of Straw Dogs, this book is a characteristically trenchant and unflinchingly clear-sighted collection of reflections on our contemporary lot. Whether writing about the future of our species on this planet, the folly of our faith in technological progress, or the self-deceptions of the liberal establishment, John Gray dares to be heretical like few other thinkers today.
Industry Reviews
This collection of powerful essays from the author of Straw Dogs is a wake-up call to the modern world. As the name suggests, 'Heresies' is a full-scale assault on conventional thought, a tirade against political ideologies and religious virtues. In this his cultural manifesto, Gray leaves no controversial stone unturned. Globalization, terrorism, atheism and biotechnology are all placed under the microscope. He even discusses (and laments) the popularity of reality television, and is less than complimentary to those who choose to watch it. Another bone of contention is the so-called 'War on Terror'. To the likes of Blair and Bush, Gray's confrontational views would be considered heresies. To liberals, however, they would be regarded as prophecies. Written prior to the US invasion, many of his essays anticipate the anarchy now commonplace in post-war Iraq. With such clear foresight, how could the credibility of his views ever be questioned? He may well be a heretic to some, but his latest book proves that he knows more about the world than the people who claim to run it. (Kirkus UK)
