This up-to-date overview and analysis of the current economic situation in Africa describes the international and domestic political and social developments that have contributed to the present state of affairs. Leading experts in the field present a scholarly, accessible overview of the topic. The contributors see few causes for optimism for Africa's development unless some significant changes occur in the way in which Western aid is provided and utilized. They argue that the international financial institutions that provide and administer aid were ill-prepared for the complexity of the problems they encountered, consequently, the last decade has been an experience of learning on the job.
