What inspired Sam Elliott to set his debut novel in a dying coastal town threatened by wildfires?

Elliott's choice of setting reflects contemporary Australian anxieties about climate change and the increasing threat of bushfires to regional communities. By placing the story in Broughlet, a coastal town already in decline, he creates a pressure-cooker environment where environmental disaster intersects with social breakdown, making it an ideal backdrop for exploring how crisis reveals both the best and worst in people. The wildfire setting also serves as a powerful metaphor for destruction, renewal, and the secrets that can no longer stay hidden when everything burns.

How does Sam Elliott's background as a podcast host influence his writing style?

As the founder and host of The Write Way podcast, Elliott has conducted extensive interviews with numerous authors, giving him unique insights into narrative craft and storytelling techniques. This experience likely contributes to his ability to create compelling dialogue and develop complex characters like Constable Dahlia Turner. His interviewing skills translate into an understanding of how to reveal character through conversation and how to pace revelations for maximum impact, which are crucial elements in crime fiction.

What makes Constable Dahlia Turner stand out as a protagonist in Australian crime fiction?

Dahlia Turner represents a fresh take on the flawed detective archetype, combining professional duty with deeply personal stakes as she investigates the murder of her best friends whilst searching for their abducted son. Her violent past that she's been trying to escape adds layers of psychological complexity, suggesting she brings both vulnerability and hard-won survival skills to her investigation. This internal conflict between her troubled history and her role as a law enforcement officer creates rich character tension that drives the narrative beyond a standard procedural.

How does the presence of the People's Cleansing Light cult elevate this beyond a standard crime thriller?

The inclusion of a fire-worshipping cult as potential arsonists adds a disturbing ideological dimension to the crimes, transforming the novel from a straightforward mystery into an exploration of extremism and fanaticism. This element allows Elliott to examine how vulnerable communities can become breeding grounds for dangerous belief systems, particularly when people are desperate for meaning or scapegoats during times of crisis. The cult's philosophy also creates an unsettling parallel between natural disaster and deliberate destruction, blurring the lines between environmental catastrophe and human malevolence.
