When publishers Bloomsbury decided to publish Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 1997 it had already been rejected by 12 other publishers but Bloomsbury took a gamble, paid £2,500 for UK & Commonwealth Rights and invested in an initial print run of just 500 hard backs.
