On one level it is a classic adventure tale, but set in Australia, and unfolding against the harsh landscape. With plenty of action and an engaging narrative that captures a lifestyle that has largely disappeared, this a great read. It clear that this story is built on lived experience.

At another level, and against the background plot, the novel explores the variety of relationships with country and the cultural imperatives that drive different forms of Aboriginal resistance to the remnants of colonial rule. Justice, physical survival, ancient culture conflicting with modern aspirations provide an unexpected depth to this gritty tale. Gregory Lee Morris
