Gravity Flow: The Jimmy Whistler Stories is a collection of short stories that detail moments in the life of Jimmy Whistler, and his encounters and experiences in 1960s America.
This is an exceptional short story collection by E.M. Schorb that delivers a multi-faceted read and an intimate look into our main point of view and that of our protagonist, Jimmy Whistler. The writing is sharp and intelligent, and as we progress through the anthology, there is a genuine feeling of connection. Schorb does a great job of infusing the work with the era it embodies. Each piece packs a huge punch.
My favorite of the collection is the titular "Gravity Flow," where a visit to Jimmy's parents' rooming house, Baldwin, introduces people dealing with mental health, addiction, and poverty. As the story evolves, a tragedy forces Jimmy to acknowledge the hardships faced in the inevitable passage of time. Within the book's darker moments, there is the constant undercurrent of humanity and resilience that gives them power.
