As fur trading in Michigan came to an end, pioneers migrated to Grand Haven for lumber. By the time the last acre of trees was harvested, Grand Haven had shifted from dependence on lumber to manufacturing and tourism. Title: 'Then & Now': New book compares Grand Haven's past to present Author: Staff Writer Publisher: Grand Haven Tribune Date: 12/21/09 The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing's "Then & Now" series focuses on Grand Haven. The book, which boasts more than 200 vintage and modern images comparing Grand Haven's past to its present, was put together by local authors Wallace Ewing and Elizabeth Dobbie for the Tri-Cities Historical Museum. The images in the 128-page soft-cover book illustrate the foundations upon which the community was built and changes wrought through the years as fur trading gave way to lumber, which shifted to manufacturing and tourism. Most of the "then" images are postcard views, which denotes what site and scenes were deemed important in the past. Many of the images show changes to public buildings -- such as the hospital, churches and schools. This is co-author Ewing's fourth book on the history of Grand Haven with Arcadia Publishing. His three previous titles are "The Grand Haven Area: 1860-1960," "The Grand Haven Area in Vintage Postcards: 1905-1975" and "Maritime Grand Haven: Coast Guard City USA." Proceeds from the $21.99 book will benefit the Tri-Cities Historical Museum.
