Globalization and the Third World bridges the gap between theoretical and empirical research and examines globalization with reference to topical case studies and examples. Looking at the changing position of the developing world within the world system, each chapter focuses on particular issues which cut across communities, nations, regions and,in consequence, the world. Exploring the manifestations of globalising processes in the world today, the authors examine aspects of development, migration, health, capital flows, the environment, popular culture in Latin America, religion and cultural imperialism and popular music. Focusing on the contradictory and hierarchical nature of processes of globalization, the book stresses not only the effects of globalization but also its limits, indicating that the process does not necessarily entail uniformity or harmony. While a 'global era' may mean the end of the 'Third World', it simultaneously means the intensification of uneven development.
