"Field measurements and laboratory experiments play an important role in the understanding of geotechnical processes and the complex three dimensional behaviour of soil and rock masses. To date research has been focused on the development and improvement of measurering techniques and equipment in order to characterise the relevant dominant processes and phenomena. Empirical associations and constitutive laws were derived and verified, and in conjunction with the rapid development of information technology and numerical modelling, more complex conditions could be analysed. Currently the application of the experimentally determined results in context of the verificiation of the numerical methods and the problem of scale is proving to be extremely important. With this two fold approach to geomechanical problems (modelling and experimental investigation) coupled with a scale appreciation, more reliable tools for the geotechnical engineer can be developed. The aim of the symposium is to provide a plenum for the exchange of ideas and experience for both of the key approaches, modelling and measurement for geotechnical engineering."
