Surrealism is perhaps the purest expression of the dictum "only connect." Gala is a narrative of connections as it bounces off the many meanings of the word, "gala," from the supermarket Gala apple to the museum gala that brought the poet together with David Salle, the painter, to Gala, Salvador Dali's wife, who was a muse to the surrealists.
