For centuries, scholars have known that not all of the books in the New Testament are authentic, a loaded truth that remains largely unknown to the general public. But if the Gospels weren't written by Jesus's inner circle—penned instead by later writers with agendas, and rivalries, all their own—what happens to the authority of the Bible In his signature incisive prose, leading religion scholar Bart D. Ehrman carefully navigates the evidence and implications of the Bible's creation.

With new, original research, Ehrman takes the reader on a journey to the ancient world and the forgery battles that raged throughout the Roman Empire. He debunks the popular myth that "writing in the name of another" was a common, accepted practice in antiquity, arguing instead that forgery was as scandalous then as it is now. Ehrman masterfully brings to life an era when documents were copied by hand—circulated freely with little or no authorial control—and highlights the political, historical, and religious uncertainty that bred.

Sure to inspire vigorous debate by Ehrman's critics and fans alike, this is a must-read for anyone who thinks they know the Bible.
