A delicious concept: one of the great masters of the genre editing a selection of stories set in the legendary worlds of other master practitioners. And when the latter include David Brin adding to his remarkable Uplift sequence, Joe Haldeman revisiting the world of his Forever War, along with such writers as Ursula Le Guin, Frederik Pohl (with a new Heechee story) and Greg Bear, we are in for a treat. Some would say that these are mostly crumbs from the table of an earlier banquet (and some of the stories - such as Nancy Kress' The Sleepless - are a touch workaday), but Silverberg's galvanising presence has brought out a heady strain of imagination in his contributors, and the net effect (apart from offering a very rewarding reading experience in its own right) is to send the reader back to the original sequences - which is no bad thing.
