Jules Verne's Facing the Flag (1896), a patriotic novel, is part of The Extraordinary Voyages. Thomas Roch, a French inventor, conceives of a destructive weapon, the Fulgurator, which could blow to atoms anything within the zone of twelve thousand square yards. Roch goes to America to sell his invention and there he finds himself commanded to fire the weapon on a French ship.
