All That Matters about Existentialism, one of the most important and misunderstood philosophical schools of thought.

How does one become an individual?

This is the question at the heart of existentialism, the trend within 19th and 20th century philosophy most associated with Jean-Paul Sartre, but which also encompasses other philosophical giants such as de Beauvoir, Kierkegaard and Heidegger, though the latter rejected the term, which only emerged in the 1940s.

About the Author

David R. Cerbone is Professor of Philosophy at West Virginia University. His main interests and research concern phenomenology and the philosophical writings of Martin Heidegger and Ludwig Wittgenstein. He has published a number of articles across these areas of research. He has also written two books - Understanding Phenomenology (Acumen, 2006) and Heidegger: A Guide for the Perplexed (Continuum, 2008) - that are aimed at students and other non-specialists. Both works were praised in reports and reviews for their clarity and accessibility. He has been teaching a course in existentialism annually, every Spring semester (with one or two exceptions), since 1998.
