The Suspect Speaker Series comprises short stories about people with aphasia, the loss of a previously held ability to speak or understand spoken or written language, due to disease or brain injury, mainly stroke.

The Suspect Speaker and the More Suspect Speaking introduced the consequences of aphasia with 30 short, short stories.

This is the third in the series. Even More Suspect Speaking has seven short stories, a group of five connected short stories and poems, all about people with communication difficulties.

The short stories have two versions:

  1. The "A" versions has shorter sentences and more gaps - perfect for people with aphasia.
  2. The "B" version is fuller. It has more descriptive prose - perfect for carers and family members who have an acquaintance with aphasia and what it means.

The poems are in several styles - Haiku, Limericks, Sonnets, Free Verse, and even a Villanelle - but they are all about aphasia and the consequences of this condition.

Industry Reviews

The Suspect Speaker series is very unique and emotional, and the books are aphasia friendly! In each book author James Stephens presents a series of stories describing events with aphasia. Most importantly, each story has levels of reading to accommodate readers with aphasia. A perfect way to tell his stories and reach all people with aphasia. Highly recommended for readers with aphasia and their supporters and care partners.

Darlene Williamson, MA, CCC-SLP, President of NAA (National Aphasia Association-USA)

You have captured so many aspects of aphasia - feelings and symptoms -

and the different journeys and experiences that people have, in such a rich and compelling way and from different perspectives.

Professor Suzanne C Purdy, The University of Auckland

His stories are both moving and funny. They are also encouraging and uplifting. AphasiaNZ highly recommends Stephens's book to anyone with experience of aphasia.

AphasiaNZ

Very often, we hear what the protagonist is thinking, and wince at what happens when they try to get it out. It's a helpful device, but it's also Stephens's truth, and the truth for thousands of other New Zealanders hit by strokes or tumours, injuries or primary progressive aphasia.
