Chapter 3. Automation-Baby Steps Toward IT Transformation

This chapter talks about the initial steps taken by the organization that build the momentum toward achieving the larger goal of optimizing its current operations. It gives examples of a few specific use cases that were initially picked to be automated and how they turned the tide in favor of automation. This chapter also introduces a few key leaders who were instrumental in the transformation process that the book talks about.

This chapter talks about some challenges that were faced by the organization during the transformation phase which included mindset of the people and the technical limitations to implement automation. How the process to achieve automation evolved and automation started seeing adoption.

This chapter details the phase when the company started looking at cloud as a viable solution for infrastructure needs. The challenges that cloud brought with it and the benefits that the company started seeing with the cloud adoption

This chapter covers a very critical phase in the transformation journey. Once the challenges on cloud were identified, the team had to quickly adapt and come up with ways to solve these problems. The solutions had to be deployed at a big scale and manual mode of performing operations no more seemed like a viable solution. This is when the team came up with a set of automation solutions which they termed as the 'Cloud Dragons'

With automation picking up steam and with cloud in the mix, the current set of IT admins needed to evolve. This chapter talks about the expectations from the existing admins in the company and what their journey towards staying relevant looked like.

This chapter introduces the concept of `Infrastructure as Code' (IAC), including why it was important for the company to adopt IAC, the challenges faced, the path to adopting IAC, and the benefits that were reaped from adopting this process.

This chapter emphasizes on the importance of learning from the journey captured in the book and trying to repeat the journey in a much swifter manner to keep optimizing the world of operations in an IT company.
