KEY SELLING POINTS:
Books about animals and the veterinarians who treat them have been and continue to be popular, from perennial solid sellers like James Herriot's series (All Creatures Great and Small, et al) to recently released titles.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMA), 36% of American households have at least one dog, 30% have at least one cat, and 1.5% have at least one horse-that translates to over 82 million households. Another 18 million have birds or specialty (often called exotic) pets.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there are over 80,000 veterinarians and 102,000 veterinary technicians currently practicing in the U.S., with demand for both of these groups anticipated to grow rapidly in the next ten years.
According to the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC), about 6,000 people apply to veterinary medical schools each year, and about 3,000 are admitted.
