"Disconnected/Reconnected" is a collection of writing from prisoners at Lancaster State Prison in Los Angeles County exploring how pain and trauma lead to incarceration, and how love and meaningful reflection lead to healing. The program at Lancaster was implemented by Words Uncaged, a non-profit organization providing creative platforms to inmates in California prisons to create a dialogue between prisoners and the outside world. Founder of Words Uncaged, Cal State LA professor of English, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, says, "This book invites you to join the incarcerated writers, victims of violent crimes, and family members of both, within its pages, to imagine how individual and collective healing is possible when the burden of pain is shared, and when we are (re)connected to our common humanity." In addition to writing, "Disconnected/Reconnected" contains artwork and portraits of the men at Lancaster. 50% of book sales will go to Words Uncaged to continue funding their programs.

Industry Reviews

"We only learn how to make better decisions by seeing or making the wrong decisions. Making mistakes only proves we are human. It's rare to find someone who can live never wanting or needing a second chance."

-Keenon Jackson aka "YG"

"So inspired and overwhelmed reading the words of men who have dug deep into their core to find their true selves. I feel these men have more depth, insight, and heart than most of the people in society and business that I interact with on a daily basis."

-Scott Budnick, Founder of Anti-Recidivism Coaliton/Producer of The Hangover series

"This book engages those caught up in the (in)justice system in the United States to reflect upon their experiences as rich sources of lived insight into what justice is--or could be. Ultimately the book shows that conceptions of justice rooted solely in punishment only lead to more trauma, violence and disconnection in our communities. In contrast, a sense of justice rooted in meaningful critical reflection, dialogue, healing and, ultimately, love, has the power to reconnect us as human beings and end generational cycles of trauma, crime and violence."
