Didsbury, situated close to the River Mersey and part of Greater Manchester, was once historically part of Lancashire. Parts of Didsbury can be traced back to the thirteenth century, when it is thought it existed as a small hamlet. With a mind, voice and opinion of its own, during the eighteenth century, Didsbury was known as a township devoid of outside influence. As a largely rural area, it wasn't until the mid-nineteenth century that visual changes began to take place. Gradual urbanisation began to occur in the Industrial Revolution, and new buildings began to spring up around the area. New ideas were also forming within society at this time, and it was here in 1889 that the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds was formed. During the Victorian expansion of the UK and particularly Manchester, Didsbury began to develop into a prosperous settlement, and a few mansions built during this time still exist. Join local author Peter Topping on his explorations around the area in Didsbury Through Time to discover just what has changed and what has stayed the same in this wonderful location.
