Fourteen-year-old Dmitri awakens bloody, barefoot, and nearly dead. Having fled from a father whose love is wrapped in bruises, and now beaten by strangers, he is left with nothing but his passion for music.

An old man pulls him from death's edge with a tin cup of broth and an antique violin. He too carries a haunted past, along with an instrument of rare beauty and a belief that real and raw music can heal shattered lives.

Years later and now an internationally renowned violinist, Dmitri visits the exclusive Gibbs Farm resort in Tanzania, where he succumbs to malaria and meets Njambi, a brilliant and beautiful Maasai physician who saves his life. Shortly after they fall in love, Njambi stumbles upon the dark secret Dmitri is struggling to hide: he suffers from a relentless degenerative disorder. In a furious race against time, Njambi engages in inspired but rogue scientific experimentation to save the man she loves from this rare and mysterious disease.
