He was born into communist royalty, publicly humiliated as a teenager, forced to live in a cave, and turned in to the authorities by his own mother. Before he became the general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, Xi Jinping was a political outcast sleeping on a flea-infested dirt platform in rural China. Those formative years fueled the paranoia, the ruthlessness, and the obsessive need for control that defines everything he has done since.

The men who elevated him thought they were picking a harmless bureaucrat who would maintain the status quo. Instead, he immediately began dismantling the system that put him there. He purged generals, imprisoned rivals who were supposed to be untouchable, abolished term limits, and crushed every internal check on his authority. He built a high-tech surveillance state, stamped his name on a mandatory ideology, and engineered a cult of personality not seen in China since Mao. None of this is the mark of a confident leader. It is the playbook of a man terrified of losing what he took.

His regime's reach extends well beyond its own borders. A massive debt-financing operation disguised as infrastructure development has hooked dozens of vulnerable countries into economic dependency. A military buildup aimed squarely at Taiwan has turned the strait into the most dangerous flashpoint on Earth. And a so-called "no limits" partnership with Putin's Russia has deepened into a coordinated authoritarian front against the democratic world. Each move is framed as national rejuvenation, but the pattern looks a lot more like coercion on a global scale.

The deepest problem is one no official in Beijing is permitted to discuss. He has destroyed the only peaceful succession mechanism China ever had, surrounded himself with loyalists who owe him everything, and refused to name an heir. The entire system now depends on a single aging autocrat with no exit plan. What happens when that arrangement fails is not a theoretical question. It is a ticking clock.
