Industry Reviews

In the beginning there was the word, and since words became, there have been souls who've deployed them righteously-voices carrying soul and song. These voices remind us of how beautiful and harrowing this life of ours can become. These voices speak breath into our bodies when the days and nights are both sublime and grim. These are the voices we look to when we're standing in deserts or street corners searching for the Mothership. Bryon Cherry is one of these voices, and in his phenomenal debut collection of poems, Death Moan, he sings us a righteous tune. Taking the baton from the Beat tradition, these poems are rooted in existential renderings and sober musings. These poems bounce off the page and into the very caverns of our wonder and wander. Cherry is a poet we can believe in, and Death Moan is a planet we can park in. It tells us to consume everything we can while we still can, to love our children and mothers, and ultimately to forgive the detonations that harm us. There are no smoke and mirrors here. This book is for the people. This book is for the mud and waters. This book is for Milwaukee.
