Reviewing current policies and practices, the book assesses the financial, economic and physical risk of building in hazardous areas, and looks at how societies approach economic development while trying to create a more resilient built environment in spite of the dangers. It examines the vulnerability of economic and social infrastructure to natural hazard events, looks at policies which imperil infrastructure, and proposes new development approaches to be undertaken by sovereign states, international development banks, NGOs, and bilateral aid agencies.

Industry Reviews

ââ¦a careful reading is rewarded by lessons learned and to be learned in the emerging field of disaster risk management. Helpful anecdotes are inserted throughout, balancing critical assessments.â ⢠Recovery Diva

âThe expertise and experience of the author stands out throughout this book, particularly in its focus on the built environment and disaster⦠Hopefully, the book will encourage new thinking among all those whose first pivot in planning and development, whether before or after a sudden-onset disaster, is to build more, bigger, and faster.â ⢠Jane Henrici, Consulting Senior Researcher and Gender Advisor, World Bank-Haiti and Lecturer, George Washington University
