In this incisive meditation, Emerson argues that life itself teaches the law of compensation more clearly than doctrine ever could. Against the common belief that the wicked prosper and the good suffer, he presents justice as immediate, woven into the fabric of existence rather than postponed to some distant reckoning. From nature's polarities of light and dark, gain and loss, power and limitation, he builds a sweeping vision of moral balance. Every advantage carries a cost, every defect some hidden gift, and every act its own consequence. This law reaches beyond individual experience into society, history, myth, labor, and art, where proverbs, legends, and even persecution reveal that wrongdoing rebounds, integrity protects, and hidden truth outlasts deceit. Yet Emerson also insists that compensation is not a leveling of all things into sameness. Beneath outward change stands the soul, a deeper reality of Being from which virtue and truth flow, while vice is only a lack. The result is a philosophy of self-reliance, moral order, and spiritual optimism, in which goodness, wisdom, love, and beauty are not sacrifices but real gains, and envy dissolves in shared spiritual fellowship.
