The social satire is more cogent than the science in this breakneck tale of a quadruplicate Candide on the lam in an overcrowded 21st century where mutated chimpanzees are the new lower class and government-sponsored Good Samaritans encourage hesitating suicides. For the record, clones are the asexually produced progeny of a single individual and Cowper's quadruplets are not clones at all but Huxleyan bottle babies born of the test tube union of egg and sperm, with eidetic memories and paranormal powers tossed in to keep the plot moving along.
